Blondes Have More Fun at Whitechapel Gallery

Get your peroxide ready (or just grab a wig at the door). On Thursday, from 6pm – 9pm, Whitechapel Gallery is throwing a “blonde farewell” to Joy Gregory’s provocative and playful exhibition, The Blonde.

This isn’t just a closing party; it’s a deep dive into the art of self-fashioning, identity, and the cultural weight of a hair color. Whether you’re a natural, a “bottled” enthusiast, or just curious about the politics of beauty, this is the place to be.

The Schedule: Screenings, Divas, and Treats

The evening is packed with events that bridge the gap between high art and high-energy fun:

  • 7:00pm Screening: Catch the ultimate 80s cult classic, Desperately Seeking Susan. Follow Madonna and Rosanna Arquette through a maze of mistaken identity and incredible vintage style.
  • The Soundtrack: A curated “All Blonde” playlist (think Blondie, Dolly, and maybe a little Gaga) will be setting the vibe all night.
  • Live Performance: Keep an eye out for “Blond Diva” performers popping up throughout the evening.
  • In the Café: Head to Alba Caffé to grab a “Blondie”—the perfect sweet treat to match the theme.

Interactive Art & Joy Gregory

The heart of the night celebrates Joy Gregory, whose work reframes “blonde” not as a white ideal, but as a tool for play and self-expression.

  • Strike a Pose: Step into the Autofoto photo booth, reduced to just £4 all evening. Use the custom backdrops and blonde wigs designed by Joy Gregory herself to transform your look.
  • Win Big: One lucky attendee will have the chance to win an original Joy Gregory artwork.
  • Late Access: Enjoy free entry to all current exhibitions, including the multi-layered film and photography of The Blonde.

Why “The Blonde”?

Gregory’s project began with a simple observation: an increasing number of people of color choosing to go blonde. By asking “Why?”, she uncovered a world where blonde hair is used to upend traditional beauty standards rather than imitate them.

From the candid honesty of her 1998 film Fairest to the playful commerce of her Brixton Market stall, Gregory shows us that identity is fluid, strategic, and—above all—dazzling.
