Brixton is buzzing with an incredible event that’s set to make a real, life-saving difference in our community. This week, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has teamed up with renowned artist Rizzy Akanji Amole and Akanji Studio for “What’s Your Blood Type?” – a unique collaboration blending art, poetry, and a crucial call to action.

Happening on February 13th and 14th at Brixton House, this isn’t just an exhibition; it’s an opportunity to connect with a powerful message and contribute to a vital cause. Rizzy, who lives with sickle cell, uses his moving artwork and poetry to share his personal journey, transforming his experience into an inspiring narrative. His exhibition, “Moon Crescent Blood,” is a poignant reminder of the power of blood donation.
But it’s more than just an art show. This event tackles a critical health disparity head-on. People of Black and mixed heritage are more likely to have the Ro blood type, which is absolutely essential for treating sickle cell disease – a condition that disproportionately affects these communities. Unfortunately, only about 2% of people in England donate blood regularly, creating a significant shortage.
Here’s where you come in: visitors are invited to take a quick, two-minute finger-prick test to discover their blood type and, if eligible, register as a new blood donor. It’s a simple, pain-free step that can have a profound impact, potentially saving or sustaining a life.
Brixton has always championed strength and solidarity. This project embodies that spirit, inviting us all to empower ourselves and our neighbours. Don’t miss this chance to be part of a legacy of care. Visit Brixton House, experience the art, know your type, and help save a life.
