The Government should never have taken so long to secure Nazanin Zaghari-release Ratcliffe’s from prison in Iran, according to Jeremy Hunt.
She expressed her joy at being reunited with her husband and children at a press appearance, calling the reunion “precious.” but she said “what’s happened now should have happened six years ago”.
For the first time since her dramatic return to the UK last week, the British-Iranian spoke out.
In April 2016, while visiting her parents in Iran with her then two-year-old daughter Gabriella, Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was detained on spying accusations. She was released last week after serving six years in prison.
Although both countries have stated that the two crises should not be linked, her release came after the UK government paid a £400 million debt to Iran dating back to the 1970s.
Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe thanked everyone who worked to get her released in a press conference in Westminster, praising her “beautiful, fantastic” husband, Richard Ratcliffe, who she said had campaigned diligently. She also expressed gratitude to her daughter for being “very patient with mummy.”
